Because what we have here is nothing short of literary gold. I want everyone to read this book. 𝙿𝙻𝙴𝙰𝚂𝙴 𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙳 𝚃𝙷𝙸𝚂 𝙱𝙾𝙾𝙺 - if dark and disturbing are your thing, it’s a 𝙼𝚄𝚂𝚃 𝚁𝙴𝙰𝙳. This book gave me actual goosebumps! First time a fictional book has done that. Daisy Bellon was only nine-years-old when her father made her an accomplice to his crimes. Her father, a local butcher known for his perfect cuts, wasn’t your standard father; and now he’s forced his secret on to his nine-year-old daughter. Coveted her into his world. A secret she’d carry for most of her life. Him a serial killer, her his unwilling accomplice. He didn’t only burden her with this knowledge; he made her complicit. That single act becomes the axis around which the rest of her life spins. And spin does it ever. Daisy grows up with a hollowness where safety should have been, her relationships marked by evasion. Lies become her shield, the distance she keeps between herself and others her only form of survival. The story alternates between two timelines: the late 1980s, when women began to vanish without a trace, and 2015, where Daisy lives a secluded existence, co-running her butcher shop with the only friend who shares in her haunted past. The words flow with an almost lyrical grace, but don’t mistake its beauty for softness. The plot - dark, disturbing, gripping. And once it takes hold, there is no escaping it. It’s compulsive, unforgettable, and impossible to put down. Loved this book. It’s just so perfect, I need more books from this author. So talented. I hope we get an audiobook for it-Julia Whelan, January LaVoy, Brittany Pressley would be so good for it. I’ve already gotten 2 friends to read this for next year! Will you be another person to? 👀
ARC✶REVIEW #ad much love for my advance copy @duttonbooks #partner 🅳🅸🆂🆂🅴🅲🆃🅸🅾🅽 🅾🅵 🅰 🅼🆄🆁🅳🅴🆁 < @jomurraywrites > ʀᴇʟᴇᴀꜱᴇꜱ: ᴍᴀʏ 𝟣𝟤, 𝟤𝟢𝟤𝟨 From a former criminal barrister comes a blazing hot legal thriller that you won’t want to put down. 𝚃𝚑𝚎𝚛𝚎 𝚒𝚜 𝚊 𝚜𝚝𝚘𝚛𝚢 𝚋𝚎𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚍 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐… 𝙴𝚟𝚎𝚛𝚢𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚑𝚊𝚜 𝚕𝚎𝚍 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚜… 𝙽𝚘𝚝𝚑𝚒𝚗𝚐 𝚒𝚜 𝚎𝚟𝚎𝚛 𝚋𝚕𝚊𝚌𝚔 𝚊𝚗𝚍 𝚠𝚑𝚒𝚝𝚎, 𝚎𝚜𝚙𝚎𝚌𝚒𝚊𝚕𝚕𝚢 𝚠𝚑𝚎𝚗 𝚒𝚝 𝚌𝚘𝚖𝚎𝚜 𝚝𝚘 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝚕𝚊𝚠... Devilishly good. If you love legal thrillers with courtroom action, this is the book for you! Told in two parts - the first focusing on the days leading up to the trial and the second the trial itself - this book will keep you entertained throughout. At the center of it all, it’s Husband vs. wife. Leila and Julian go head-to-head in a high-profile murder case. It’s Leila’s first murder trial, and she’s defending the accused, while her husband is prosecuting him. The tension hits immediately and the stakes are massive. Not just professionally - but personally. Because how does a marriage survive something like this? There’s also one small issue: Julian is the one who taught Leila everything she knows. He knows her like the back of his hand - but so does she of him. Let the games begin… There’s no faster way to truly see someone for who they truly are than standing opposite them in court, dissecting every move, every weakness, every strategy. Grab your popcorn because this is about to be the most entertaining book you’ve read in a while. A bit repetitive, but I didn’t mind. Loved watching Leila come into her own power. It was a beautiful growth to watch happen. The men doubted her, but they should have known better. I enjoyed the mystery of Witness X. We get snippets of her life but we don’t know who she is. I was changing who I thought she was with every chapter. Keeps you on your toes. Just loved everything about this book - especially how it shines a light on how much trials aren’t really about the evidence - it’s ALL about who can tell the better story. Who is more likeable. Who puts on the best act. It’s a stage. It’s a chess game. Check mate.
